Ancient and traditional music instruments, as well as the more recent ones, were used to accompany folk singers or were played solo.

The tune and the rhythm of sound conveyed the beauty or appropriate emotional expression to which the musician aspired.

There are various materials from which musical instruments were made including wood, metal, leather, plastic. Craftspeople who practice making music instruments are often good artists, music performers and connoisseurs themselves. Early folk tradition reports of woodwind instruments including fifes, flageolets (small flutes), pipes, ocarinas, double flutes all across the Serbian territory. The brass instruments were mostly later introduced in the folk music of XX century in Serbia.
