BASKET-WEAVING

This craft developed in Serbia at the beginning of 20th century, first as a cottage industry. Baskets are made from interwoven brushwood. Objects made in this manner were predominantly used for carrying loads of food and provisions.

Basket-weaving was very much developed in Vojvodina (Northern province) in the XIXth century and the beginning of the XXth century, as well as in other parts of Serbia.

This craft requires a particular hand knitting skill utilizing the willow tree treated in order to become pliable. A knife is the main tool in this case.

Basket-weaving products for the household or as furniture are today mostly available at fairs as souvenirs.
