Mosaic

Mosaic is the art of creating images by arranging small pieces of stone, stained glass and other materials.

Usually, the pieces are roughly cubic forms (so-called tesare). Traces of the technique date to the second millennium BC, and precursors of this technique are found in Mesopotamia.

At a later stage in the wider Mediterranean region ambitious mosaics were made. in ancient Rome, Carthage, and according to early Christian records in Byzantine and Islamic cultural circles until the Renaissance. Floor mosaics have been a significant form of expression in the Roman art. Mosaic is a decorative art, and today is used in the interior design of various structures such as religious and private structures.
